Tuesday, March 31st marked the beginning of our journey as a choir practicing social distancing. I’m hoping over the next while, we can have some fun undertaking possibly some virtual singing. This is all new for us but we’re game to try new things!

For now, I’m sending my rehearsal plan for the next rehearsals. You’ll find a pdf listing practice suggestions and audio samples and individual parts. If each of you practice at home, when we get together again (in person or virtually) we will have fun putting things together. Please keep singing! Stay tuned and safe! Miss you all!

All five VCS Choirs. Our theme will be LET THE RIVER RUN (taken from our Mass choir selection) and I know our singers will “wake the nation”! The show will be 7pm, Friday, February 28th, Tupper Auditorium. The music is amazing!

Fantastic! Woo hoo! The Vancouver Cansing Choirs raised $3200.00 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank at the show last night! Exceeding last year’s total! Wonderful seasonal performances by the five VCS Choirs and rousing audience singalong! Big thanks to Kevin Eng, Andrea Westaway, Hanna and Sage for their leadership and help!

Greater Vancouver Foodbank: “This is amazing!! We can turn that $3200 into up to $9600 worth of wholesome, nutritious food for folks in need of food support!”

LEVEL 1 (ages 5 & 6). Our youngest group of musicians…

LEVEL 2 (ages 7 & 8). Slightly more advanced group who also sing with Level 3.

LEVEL 3 (ages 9 – 15. Non – auditioned). A vibrant group of singers who sometimes work with Level 4 and adults.

LEVEL 4 CHORthemo (ages 10 – 16. Auditioned). An advanced group of boys and girls who provide leadership to the younger singers and also “wow” audiences with their individual choir work and singing with the adult choir.

ADULT CHOIR (grades 11 and 12 through adult: non-auditioned but you must be able to carry a tune…). A wonderful group of keen adults, many of whom are parents of youth choristers.

BRAVO to all 5 VCS Choirs!! Wow, we raised $2600.00 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank! What a fantastic community effort! $500.00 more than last year.

Congrats to all five VCS Choirs for an amazing concert on Tues. Dec 12th – spirited seasonal singing, energetic audience participation and wonderful acting from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” speakers! We raised $2224.00 for the Greater Vancouver Foodbank surpassing last year’s total!!

Here are a few teacher comments from the Level 3 & Level 4 Musical theatre choral show at the end of May:

This was a wonderful ‘hook’ and a terrific opportunity for those young artists to entertain all ages with their acting and singing talents.” Tony Araujo

“Thanks for the lovely performance! My students had a blast!” Deanna Bistriceanu (Simon Fraser Elementary).

“It was awe inspiring! Truly! I would love to be on a mailing list for next year if that is possible.” Christine Oades (General Wolfe Elementary).

“It was such a great show- again!! I always get shivers and come close to tears when I hear your children sing, it is such a beautiful thing. Thank you.” Jessica Wilkes (Van Horne Elementary).

At the Dec 13th Greater Vancouver Fundraiser, our five VCS choirs raised $2000.00! Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not (Dr Seuss). Way to go everyone!!

show-picturesLast night, I went to see a Christmas concert by Vancouver CanSing, a relatively new choral organization founded and conducted by Gerda Blok-Wilson. What a delight to see the wonderful work being done here! CanSing is comprised of various choral groups of varying age groups, all of whom sing separately but also engage in multi-generational music-making.  I could not help but be swept away by the spirit of community.  The joy and sense of belonging in the room was undeniable. I am impressed by the obvious musical strides this organization has made in a few short year… Bravo!!! Dr Jeanette Gallant

All the VCS choirs gave a spine-tingling performance of my SATB & youth choir arrangement of “Land of the Silverbirch.” I was impressed and I felt honoured to have the choirs perform it. The native drums were haunting and the violin/piano added extra spice. It was a fitting finale to another great concert of musicking!  I thought the level four singers (CHORthemo) were amazing!  What wonderful progress they have made.  I especially enjoyed Sing, Sing, Sing.    Susan Wagner

“A sincere thank you from Anna, Mark, Silvia and Luca for this past semester. We enjoyed ourselves and the concert was amazing. We loved the mixed ages, voices, songs and audience participation.” Silvia and Austin-Dotto clan

“It was wonderful!  My thanks to you and Kevin. I am looking forward to  “Spirit of Adventure.”‘ Bonnie Mutton“What a great evening to enjoy the great indoors, while it poured outside! The standing O was icing on the cake!” David Vaisbord

“Thank you so much for a wonderful season of song, Gerda. I have loved every minute of the camaraderie, challenge and sense of real ‎community.” Caroline Nevin

“The kids were fantastic – the sound carried so well, even the soloists. And the choreographed numbers were so cute. The adult choir was flawless…. Brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for bringing so much joy to the neighbourhood.” Beth Ringdahl

General VCS Info

VCS will provide opportunities to improve vocal skills through a variety of vocal collaborative settings including choir and musical theatre.

As a professional music educator and conductor, Gerda Blok-Wilson believes everyone CanSing but the teaching and learning process is technically and socially diverse depending on the experience of the singer.  Including the classics, jazz, popular, gospel and world music, expressing the meaning of the words in a song is the key to developing as a singer. When the expressiveness of the words are understood and interpreted, engagement in the singing process flows authentically.

For the young singer, movement and acting skills are important, both of which are emphasized in the VCS format.  In addition to the vocal technique and stage training that each singer will receive, the program will also build self-esteem, confidence and social skills.

All rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays at Cityview Church at 4370 Sophia Street.

Please do not make phone call inquiries to the church instead contact me.
